Part 2: The Cash Reclaimers (Levers 4, 5, and 7)

Welcome back to The Profit & Cash-Flow Accelerator, our three-part strategic series mapping out how a typical Australian $10,000,000 turnover business can unlock a massive $1,059,971 in estimated first-year cash benefits without growing its sales by a single dollar.

In our first instalment, we explored The Profit Builders (Levers 2, 3, and 6), which surgically stopped profit leaks to add +$477,860 directly to the bottom-line net profit.

But as any seasoned director knows, profit is only half the battle. A business can report record-breaking profits on paper and still go completely bankrupt if that money is not sitting in the bank. You cannot pay wages or rent with “theoretical” profit.

This brings us to the second, and arguably most stressful, category of the Seven Key Numbers (7KN) framework: The Cash Reclaimers. In this instalment, we show how a business can claw back $554,260 in cold, hard cash that is already theirs, but is currently trapped inside daily operations.

The Emotional Reality: The Pay Run Anxiety

To understand the power of this strategy, let us return to the case of a mid-sized Australian business turning over $10,000,000 a year.

It is late Thursday afternoon, and the office is quiet. But inside the Director’s office, there is a familiar, heavy feeling of anxiety. Tomorrow is the fortnightly payroll.

On paper, the company is a roaring success. The invoice ledger is full, and the order pipeline is healthy. Yet, as the Director stares at the corporate bank account, they feel a knot in their stomach. The actual cash reserves are dangerously low.

The Director is left wondering: “We are turning over ten million dollars. Where on earth is our cash?”

The cash isn’t gone. It is simply stuck. It is tied up in outstanding invoices, sitting on dusty warehouse shelves, or being paid out to suppliers far too quickly. The business is essentially giving interest-free loans to everyone else while starving its own operations.

Faced with this cash squeeze, many business owners instinctively look for a bank overdraft, a high-interest business loan, or a stressful sales sprint. But when CFO On Call analyzed the balance sheet, they bypassed outside debt entirely. Instead, they focused on reclaiming the business’s own trapped cash by turning three specific operational dials.

The Strategy: Activating the Three Cash Reclaimer Levers

CFO On Call deployed a targeted operational plan to free up cash across three distinct areas: accounts collections, stock control, and supplier payment cycles.

1. Lever 4: Accounts Collections (Shaving off 14 Days)

The business was waiting an average of 45 “Debtor Days” to receive payment from clients after invoicing. In effect, their hard-earned cash was sitting on other companies’ balance sheets. By professionalising the billing sequence, introducing automated friendly reminders, and setting up structured payment expectations for new clients, CFO On Call helped the business reduce its average collection cycle to 31 days. This minor 14-day collection speed-up instantly released +$403,660 in cash flow directly back into the company bank account.

2. Lever 5: Inventory / WIP (Trimming just 4 Days)

Next, they looked at physical stock and work-in-progress (WIP). Unsold inventory on a shelf is literally cash covered in dust. By refining production forecasting, improving scheduling, and tightening up stock control, they trimmed the average time inventory was held from 40 days down to 36 days. This modest 4-day inventory reduction unlocked an additional +$69,199 in dormant cash.

3. Lever 7: Accounts Payable (Extending by 5 Days)

Finally, they addressed how the business paid its own bills. Previously, the company paid invoices the moment they arrived, often weeks before they were due. Without disrupting relationships, the CFO helped negotiate payment terms with key suppliers to align with standard terms, safely moving the average payment window from 30 days to 35 “Creditor Days.” This careful 5-day extension allowed the business to retain +$82,192 in its bank account for longer.

The Result: $554,260 in Cold, Hard Cash Restored

By compounding these three realistic, operational adjustments, the business achieved a massive cash breakthrough:

  • Faster Collections (Lever 4): +$403,660
  • Smarter Stock Control (Lever 5): +$69,199
  • Balanced Payments (Lever 7): +$82,192
  • Total Working Capital Released: +$554,260

This was not “on-paper” profit. This was $554,260 in actual, liquid cash flooding back into the business bank account.

No expensive bank overdrafts, no high-interest loans, and no equity dilution. Best of all, it permanently erased the fortnightly pay run anxiety. The business was finally self-funding its own operations.

If you are constantly stressed about cash flow despite running a successful multi-million-dollar operation, you don’t need to borrow your way out of trouble. You simply need to reclaim the cash that is already yours.

What Comes Next?

Now that the business has plugged its profit leaks (unlocking $477,860) and reclaimed its trapped cash (releasing $554,260), a fascinating financial phenomenon occurs.

In our third and final instalment of The Profit & Cash-Flow Accelerator, we will explore The Silent Compounder—and show you how these internal shifts compound to slash your bank interest costs by $27,851 annually, rolling up into a spectacular $1,059,971 first-year benefit.
